Antibodies characteristically bind to a specific target molecule, which has made them a
valuable scientific resource. However, traditionally produced in animals, antibodies are
not reliable binding molecules and also compromise the welfare of animals. Animal
Friendly Affinity-reagents (AFAs) are antibodies and other binding reagents that are
produced without using animals. AFABILITY, meaning ‘friendliness’, incorporates the
acronym ‘AFA’, meaning animal friendly affinity-reagents and ‘ability’, meaning to
empower antibody producers and end users by facilitating antibody production through
the generation of AFAs. AFABILITY promotes the use of AFAs, replacing the use of
animals, binding better science with saving animals.
